Practical project (BW/WI/WIET)

You have to complete a practical project in the Bachelor's degree programmes Business Administration, Business Information Systems, Business Psychology and Industrial Engineering and Electrical Engineering; this should be completed in the sixth or seventh semester. The practical project is intended to apply and deepen the knowledge gained in the course of study to practical tasks. Your practical project must be documented and presented. The practical project can be replaced by a semester abroad! Additional voluntary internships are possible.

1. Requirements

The practical project can be completed at the earliest after the end of lectures in the third semester.  Non-dual students can only register for the practical project if they have successfully completed all compulsory courses of the first three semesters according to the study plan.

You can find the practical project regulations on the right-hand side in the download area.

2. Search for an internship

You apply independently for a relevant internship of your choice in a company or institution. If you are accepted, you look for a supervising professor and document the contents of the internship. This includes, for example, briefly introducing the company, explaining your motivation and describing your tasks during the internship.

Possible internship offers are sent to your university e-mail address at regular intervals (especially from Luxembourg). You can also find information on the notice boards in the K-building, at the university fairs and at the job exchange of the Career Service of Trier University of Applied Sciences. Erasmus funds may be available for internships abroad. Please contact the  Agentur für internationale Hochschul-Mobilität (agency for international university mobility).

3. Registration and duration

Please note that you cannot register for the practical project via the QIS. The application for admission to the practical project should be submitted approx. 3 weeks before the start.

  1. Please first have it checked whether you fulfil the admission requirements and send the application for admission with proof of performance to e-mail to pp-business(at)hochschule-trier.de. If you fulfil them, you will receive a signature on your application for admission.
  2. Submit the checked and signed application for admission as well as a copy of the contract and a brief description of your planned fields of activity to your supervisor.
  3. Once all the necessary signatures have been obtained, please send all documents digitally to pp-business(at)hochschule-trier.de. Your practical project is now recorded in the system.

The duration of the practical project must be at least 14 weeks in full-time employment. Days of absence must be made up.

If you would like to combine your practical project with a practice-oriented Bachelor's thesis in the same company, the internship contract must be extended by the time spent working on the thesis and must cover a total of at least 23 weeks.

4. Insurance cover

Accident insurance

  • Domestic: Statutory accident insurance only applies to the geographical area of the university. During an internship in Germany, students must therefore be insured through their employer (not the university).
  • Abroad: The extent of the insurance must be clarified with the employer in each individual case.

Accident insurance is strongly recommended.

Health insurance

  • Germany: Students working in Germany are insured through their general health insurance.
  • Abroad: The scope and area of validity of the health insurance (statutory or private) should be enquired about with the insurer. If necessary, health insurance must be taken out abroad.

5. After the internship

You will prepare a practical project report during or after the internship. The report should consist of approx. 15 pages and be coordinated with the supervisor in the department and in the company. You will make an appointment for a presentation at the university (approx. 30 minutes plus interview) and/or send the report without a presentation to the supervisor, depending on what has been concluded). The practical project is graded. The grade is based on the (presentation), the report and your internship certificate. The practical project receives 18 ECTS points.
