Preparatory Courses

The Business School regularly offers preparatory courses for a number of essential modules in its degree programmes. These courses serve to refresh school material, for example for Mathematics, or as an introduction to certain programming languages, for example for Fundamentals of Programming, and are thus intended to facilitate the transition from school to university. The courses usually take place during the lecture-free period before the semester begins. The current planning status for the summer semester 2021 can be found on this page. Due to the Corona pandemic, preparatory courses cannot take place as usual as face-to-face events.

Preparatory Course in Mathematics

The preparatory course in Mathematics is aimed at first-year students in the Bachelor's degree programmes in Business Administration and Business Information Systems.

The contents of a preparatory course in Mathematics are usually:

  • Mathematical notation
  • Structure of the number system and set theory
  • Arithmetic laws
  • Roots and powers
  • Logarithm laws
  • Linear and quadratic equations
  • Sums and products

In the summer semester 2021, the preparatory course unfortunately cannot take place in classroom format according to current planning. However, we are offering you the following support at this point:

1. Under the following link you can download a short introductory script to the mathematics lecture, in which selected prerequisite mathematical knowledge is repeated.

iNTRODUCTORY skript (In German)

2. The contents of the script provided under point 1 were discussed in the summer semester 2020 in the form of two online videos (in German). We offer these videos to you at this point. To access the videos, you will need your university ID with password. Access is therefore only possible after enrolment.

Please note that these videos were recorded for the summer semester 2020 and some information may still refer to it. Where possible, the video has been edited slightly to make it more general. Sometimes, however, some introductory words are missing here and there as a result. We ask for your forbearance.

    Preparatory Course Fundamentals of Programming

The preparatory course "Fundamentals of Programming" is aimed primarily at first-year students in the Business Information Systems degree programme who are programming newcomers. The following topics are covered in the course:

    • What is programming for? Why Python?
    • Basic structure of programmes
    • Variables and data types
    • Control structures (conditional statements, branching, loops)
    • Working with integrated development environments
