Informationen about Windows 10 ESU licence

For workstation systems/computers that cannot / should not be updated to Windows 11 for compelling technical reasons or for reasons of sustainability, it is possible to postpone the switch to Windows 11 for up to 3 years by purchasing a Windows 10 ESU licence (Extended Security Updates).

From 15.10.2025, Windows 10 systems without an ESU licence may not be operated on the university's campus network. The IT departement will disconnect Windows 10 systems without an ESU licence from the network without warning.

Here you will find all important information regarding the use of the ESU licence:

In each case 1 year from 14.10.25, maximum 3 years (until October 2028)
Can be cancelled annually on 14.10.

Year 1 (from 14.10.2025): €1.31; Year 2: €2.62; Year 3: €5.24
If you join later, the costs will still be charged from 14.10.2025
Payment method: annually
The licences are procured in bundles via the IT departements and billed at a flat rate.

Security patches for Windows 10
no new functions
no non-security-related updates.

For systems (e.g. laboratory computers) that are (temporarily) connected to the campus network but cannot be updated to Windows 11 for technical reasons (e.g. special drivers, applications).
Use the three years to create a secure alternative!
For workstations whose hardware is not suitable for Windows 11, but which fulfil our minimum technical requirements for Windows 10 (see section "Minimum requirements for Windows 10 systems with RZ IT-Service Flat / ByCall") and are sufficiently powerful for their intended use.
Bear in mind that the workstation will not receive any function updates and it may not be possible to install completely new applications.
Make sure you have a secure replacement solution in place before the 3 years expire.

For workstations that rely on the latest features, high performance and brand-new applications.
