Self-carved, self-designed: Stone workshop inspires youngsters on Boys' Day at the Gemstone and Jewelry Campus

On 23 April 2026, the Gemstone and Jewellery Campus in Idar-Oberstein once again took part in the nationwide Boy’s Day and welcomed six boys aged 12 and 13 for a hands-on insight into the world of gemstone cutting.

The participants – hailing from the Birkenfeld district, the Taunus region, the Mainz-Bingen district, the Rhine-Palatinate district and southern Hesse – enjoyed a varied programme centred on gemstone working. Under the expert guidance of Levan Jishkariani, head of the campus’s gemstone cutting workshop, they were first introduced to basic techniques such as grinding, faceting and engraving. The boys were then able to try out these steps for themselves on professional stone cutting machines.

With great care and enthusiasm, the participants created unique pieces of jewellery and stone objects, which they were able to take home as a memento or a small gift. Particular mention must be made of one participant who was taking part in Boy’s Day on campus for the third time – a clear sign of the enduring interest in this creative craft.

The Campus in Idar-Oberstein is actively involved in Boy’s Day, aiming to give young people practical insights into creative and craft-based careers at an early stage. The aim is to raise awareness of professions that are often overlooked in the school curriculum. The Gemstone and Jewellery Campus in Idar-Oberstein is an integral part of this initiative.
