ThinkingJewellery 2
ThinkingJewellery Two reports on the different perspectives of our quest for a "theory of jewellery“. The series "ThinkingJewellery" arose from the symposium series of the same name in which purely specialist jewellery expertise is deliberately integrated only sporadically and exemplarily – as well as in these books. Instead, scientists who look at the phenomenon "jewellery" from the outside will have their say. Then only an interdisciplinary approach makes it possible to determine the position of jewellery within the context of art and design within our contemporary society.
ThinkingJewellery Two offers, besides a contribution by Wilhelm Lindemann on the historical development of the crystalline, an essay by Regine Prange on the factual but also content-related reflections in the work of van Jeff Koons and its relations to Andy Warhole as well as an essay by Olaf Müller, he introduces thoughts on Goethe's work relating to physical phenomena.

Gemstones have always been, since time immemorial, heavily charged with meanings, have even been regarded as magical objects. For that reason they have also become an art medium since the early modern age and have shaped as art symbols – in the form of the crystal – both Romanticism and Modernism, for example in the works of Caspar David Friedrich, Lyonel Feininger and many more. In the latter half of the twentieth century, not only have such artists as Bernd Munsteiner, Ute Eitzenhöfer and Bernhard Schobinger rediscovered the gemstone; through the Hochschule für Edelstein und Schmuck Trier/Idar-Oberstein and other similar specialist institutions it is also undergoing a revival in today’s art production – right up to Damien Hirst. This publication spans an arc from stone-cutting in the early modern age to the (gemstone) art of the twenty-first century. A large section devoted to illustrations – featuring art historically important works – encompasses the diversity of contemporary positions for the first time.
With essays by Wilhelm Lindemann, Idar-Oberstein, Regine Prange, Goethe-Universität Frankfurt a. M. and Paulus Rainer, Kunsthistorisches Museum Wien, Vienna
