"“Second Skin” explores the relationship between people and jewellery as a dynamic, embodied process that develops through interactions such as viewing, touching and wearing. Experiences, knowledge and beliefs, both individual and social, shape these relationships, through which a person can navigate their identity. Jewellery acts as a medium for the materialisation of memories and emotions.
Maker, beholder, wearer and exhibitor have different perspectives on jewellery. They are fluid roles which often overlap, producing multiple, simultaneous modes of engagement with jewellery.
The physical forms of both the human body and the object influence whether an interaction occurs and how it unfolds, with desire serving as a motivating factor for engagement. Viewing the human body as a medium for sensory perception and interaction, touch is fundamental to the development of a relationship between a person and a jewellery object.
Situating jewellery within broader social contexts, it acts as a carrier of meaning and emotion and can be understood as a form of thinking. Gestures and practises surrounding jewellery might be more important for relational bonding than the object’s physical form alone, positioning jewellery as a second skin through which personal and collective meanings and emotions are embodied."
