Geoscience students try out gemstone carving in Idar-Oberstein

Every summer, students of geosciences at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz have the opportunity to get to know the material stone from a completely new perspective.

At the Gemstone and Jewellery Campus in Idar-Oberstein, they can put the theoretical knowledge they acquire about (precious) stones during their studies into practice and try their hand at working with gemstones themselves.

This year, twelve students took part in two groups. They immersed themselves in the practical side of gemstone carving for a week each. They were supervised by our graduate Natascha Frechen and workshop leader Levan Jishkariani, who passed on their knowledge with a great deal of experience and passion.

In return, Dr Tobias Häger from the Institute of Geosciences at JGU Mainz regularly offers gemmology seminars for the students in Idar-Oberstein, a lively exchange between science and artistic craftsmanship.
