Projects and final-year theses in the Department of Computer Science are managed via the VAPS system. It enables those involved in a project to monitor and update its status.
These parties include, for example, students, lecturers, staff, and members of the Department of Computer Science’s examination board or the distance learning coordination team. The aim of the system is the centralised and standardised management and archiving of all projects and final-year theses completed within the Department of Computer Science.
Once students have agreed on a topic for a project or thesis with a lecturer, the project is created in VAPS. Students must then log in to the system and confirm the details of the project, in particular the agreed completion dates.
Whilst the project is in progress, it is displayed as ‘active’ in the system. As soon as the supervisor has marked the thesis as submitted in the system, a declaration of originality must be submitted and details regarding archiving and possible publication must be provided. Once the thesis has been marked, students can view their marks in the system. The system sends email notifications as soon as action is required on the part of the students.
As an extension of the VAPS system, there is now also a topic exchange designed to help students find a supervisor for their projects and final-year theses.
Students can either express their interest in existing topic proposals and thus get in touch with the lecturers, or post their own suggestions. In addition, the topic exchange can be used to find team members for their own project ideas.
