The international media and computer games industry is a growth market which, more than almost any other, is characterised by interdisciplinary collaboration between a range of technical and artistic skills. Digital skills derived from the development of interactive media are already in very high demand outside the entertainment industry (e.g. 3D visualisation, virtual and augmented reality, gamification), which highlights the significant need for skilled professionals both within and outside the sector.
The degree programme “Computer Science – Digital Media and Games”, with its two specialisations “Media” and “Games”, forms part of the university’s interprofessional strategy to raise its profile. Practical relevance is fostered through a team-oriented project and learning environment characterised by active collaboration, particularly with the Department of Design. Through interdisciplinary projects, students are made aware of technical and artistic challenges, and the development of marketable and fundable prototypes for media and games products is driven forward.
The department provides organisational and financial support to student teams to enable them to take part in competitions and to present projects and prototypes to audiences and potential publishers through trade fair appearances and networking events.
In collaboration with the start-up association GamesAhead e.V., networking within the Greater Region and the exchange of specialist knowledge beyond the university’s boundaries are promoted through a variety of formats. Sustainable solutions to societal challenges are developed through the transfer of gaming technologies (e.g. virtual reality) and concepts (educational/serious games) to other fields of application (e.g. mobility, energy supply, smart cities) and are reinforced through application-oriented research and development projects, for example in the field of health games in collaboration with the therapy-related degree programmes (occupational therapy, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy) and the Health Campus.
The university-affiliated Digital Game Hub HUBERTTA offers start-up founders and those interested in setting up a business an ideal, interdisciplinary environment covering all areas of digitalisation. Thanks to its open structure, students can network here from the early stages of their studies, undertake work placements and collaborate on commercial projects. Working closely with the university’s lecturers, it serves as an incubator for ideas aimed at strengthening inter-professional collaboration and knowledge transfer with other sectors of the economy in the Greater Region.
