Steps to a Successful Bachelor Application

1. Submission of the portfolio / portfolio examination

In the field of communication design, in addition to the generally required admission requirements for university studies and a job-related internship, drawing and design skills combined with creative imagination are desirable. Communication design in its manifold manifestations in scientific, social, political and cultural fields demands a high degree of general education from the communication designer.

Applicants with a general university entrance qualification should complete a preliminary internship of 12 weeks. As a rule, 8 weeks of this period must be completed at the start of the course, the remainder within one year of the start of the course.

Delivery of the Portfolio and Portfolio Examination

10 to 15 independently produced works are to be sent in or handed in in a stable, clean folder (max. A2). They can come from the following fields:

Drawing, graphics, writing and typography, photography, print graphics, computer-aided design, text design, film and video, sculpture.

Applicants should submit work which they themselves consider suitable as a basis for assessment.

You can hand in your portfolio in person at the secretary's office.

(As we do not return any folders, we ask you to pick up your folders personally at the latest after half a year. Applicants who are invited to take the aptitude test can take the application folder with them on both days.)

Qualification Examination

The two-day aptitude test for the 2019 summer semester will take place on 11 and 12 June 2019, from 8:30 - 16:30 hours.
It comprises one task each:

- from the field of nature/object drawing
- from the field of illustration              
- from the field of font design
- from the field of design

The participants are expected to have skills in the performing arts.
Further application requirements can be obtained from the Student Secretariat at Schneidershof.


Portfolio Consultation Dates

Thursday, September 23rd, 2020, 3pm to 5pm (digital)
Thursday, October 14th, 2020, 3pm to 5pm (digital)
Thursday, November 4th, 2020, 3pm to 5pm (digital)


Please proceed as follows to register for the digital consultation:

1. Digitalization of Your Work
Please no more than 20 works! Photographs and scans in colors as true to the original as possible can be submitted. 
- file format: JPEG / PDF - maximum file size: 20 MB - file/image naming: last_name_first_name_consulting_01.jpg

2. Short Description of Your Work
Additionally, a short description and questions as well as name, e-mail, phone number (optional) - File format: PDF

3. Create Folder
Please collect the work and description in a folder, example: Last_First_Name_23September

4. File Upload
Upload the folder on the Seafile link that corresponds to your desired appointment:

October 14th, 2020 (3pm to 5pm)
The upload should be done by October 13th at 12am.

Attend the meeting:

November 4th, 2020 (3pm to 5pm)
The upload should be done until November 3rd at 12am.

5. Feedback

The counseling takes place together with other prospective students. Please understand that a maximum of approx. 15 minutes is planned for each consultation and that only one consultation per person can be offered.

For the folder are considered as subject areas: 

Drawing and painting, color studies, font and typography, printmaking, illustration, photography, audio-visual design/motion picture (film and video), design in digital media, staged design, three-dimensional works in photographic reproduction, design work with an application reference and experimental design work. 

The assessment criteria for the evaluation of the individual works are in particular: 

  • Breadth of constructive and creative talent, 
  • Creativity (originality, association and interpretation skills), 
  • Sense of color, sense of form, adequacy of the chosen materials and pictorial means in relation to the choice of theme, 
  • Capability of conception (appropriateness, clarity and information value), 
  • Development capability of the achieved performance level. 

The works should provide information about creative potential, artistic talent, the ability to think conceptually, the ability to think abstractly, visual sensitivity with regard to form, color and communicative function as well as spatial imagination.

Portfolio Delivery for the Summer Semester 2021

by November 12, 2020, 12:00am at the latest.

Due to the current situation, the portfolio is delivered in digital form.

Please proceed as follows:

1. Digitalization of Your Work
You can submit 10 - 15 works as photographs and/or scans in colors as true to the original as possible.

2. Create folder
Please collect the works in a folder with the name: 2020_21-EPKD_Folder_First Name.

Qualification Examination for the Summer Semester 2021

The qualification examination is carried out in digital form due to the current situation. 

With the notification of the results of the portfolio examination you will receive the topic of the term paper in regard to the four examination parts.

The submission takes place via file upload on the Seafile server.

Please collect the papers in a folder named: 2020-EPKD_Hausarbeit_NameVorname.

The deadline for submission of the papers is 06/17/2020, 12:00 am.
