Internship I

Proof of practical work (pre-study internship) as a full-time position (40 hours per week) of 12 weeks must be provided; at least 4 weeks of this must be completed by the start of the lecture period of the 2nd semester. The remaining weeks must be completed by the time the thesis is registered. The examination board may extend the deadlines in individual cases. Relevant practical work experience will be recognized after consultation.

Purpose of the pre-study internship:
The pre-study internship is intended to impart basic knowledge and skills in companies in the main construction industry/ in the field of architecture and to enable interns to gain an insight into the conditions and processes of the professional field.

Content of the pre-study internship:
The majority of the pre-study work placement should be completed in companies in the main construction industry: Earthworks, bricklaying, concrete work, carpentry and other building trades such as carpentry, locksmithing and trades in technical building equipment. The remaining part should be completed in planning offices of freelance architects and landscape architects or the public sector, the building trade and industry. The internship should be completed in as many consecutive periods as possible, although periods of less than two weeks will not be recognized.

The areas of work during the pre-study internship should be in the conceptual/design as well as the craft/technical environment:
- Methods and skills of planning and design with the associated presentation techniques.
- Creation of simple plans and working documents.
- Implementation of planning in reality.
- Assistance with site preparation, measuring, invoicing, surveying, building and construction drawings.

Other practical activities may be recognized as relevant in justified exceptional cases by the course director.

Note: The university / degree program does not arrange internships. Suitable and recognized training companies can be found primarily through the responsible employment office, the Chamber of Industry and Commerce or the Chamber of Crafts.

Training centers:
The choice of training facility is left to the trainees, but the training facilities must be approved for training by the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Chamber of Crafts or the Chamber of Architects. Internship periods in school institutions are generally only recognized as pre-study internships up to a duration of eight weeks before the start of studies.

Legal relationships during the pre-study internship:
The internship relationship is governed by an internship contract or formal registration with the school, and interns are subject to the company or school regulations of the training center. Interns should ensure that they have adequate insurance cover during their internship. In particular, Trier University of Applied Sciences is not liable for damage caused by interns during their work at the company or school. Working time lost due to illness of more than two days must be made up. In the event of longer periods of absence, trainees should ask the training center for an extension of the training period in order to be able to complete the training period they have started to the extent necessary.

Reporting and certification:
Interns must prepare a summary report on their internship, which must be confirmed by the training center. The summary report should comprise approx. two pages per week completed and consist of two parts. In Part 1, the training centers and the work carried out by the trainees for each day should be listed in keywords. Part 2 should contain sketches and the corresponding technical details.

The training company issues the trainee with a certificate of the internship completed there, which should contain at least the following information:
- Start and end of the pre-study internship,
- days of absence,
- type of employment.
The certificate should also indicate that the training institution meets the requirements of the pre-study internship and the examination regulations.

Recognition of the pre-study work placement:
Recognition of the pre-study internship is granted by the head of the degree program, and interns must submit the properly maintained training record and certificate. The original internship certificate must be submitted to the degree program office in good time and must comply with the internship regulations.
Certificates not written in German can only be recognized if they are translated by sworn or appointed interpreters and submitted in the original. Copies must be officially certified. Internships in foreign training centers must comply with the internship regulations.

Entry into force, transitional provisions:
The regulation for the pre-study internship applies to all students starting their studies from the winter semester 2025/2026 onwards. It also applies to students who started their studies before this regulation came into force and have not provided evidence of 12 weeks of internship.
