On Land, at Sea, and in the Air: Human-Computer Interaction in Safety-Critical Spaces of Control

Workshop at INTERACT 2023 organized by the IFIP Working Group 13.5 on Human Error, Resilience, Reliability, Safety and System Development

In many areas, successfully deploying interfaces with high usability and user experience (UX) is crucial for people’s safety and wellbeing. These include, for example, control rooms for emergency services and energy suppliers, aircraft cockpits, ship bridges, surgery rooms, and intensive care units. Information and cooperation needs are not limited to the users’ immediate environment but often involve numerous actors in other places (regulators, field workers, shift supervisors, remote assistance, etc.). The specific aspects of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) in such spaces of control are the subject of this workshop.

This workshop is open to everyone interested in the aspects related to the design, engineering, evaluation, deployment, training, maintenance, and certification of human-computer interaction in safety-critical spaces of control.

We invite participants to present position papers describing real-life case studies that illustrate how a new technology would enhance operations in safety-critical spaces of control. Prospective participants should submit papers describing their experience, interest and views on the design, engineering and evaluation in safety-critical contexts.

Important Dates & Submission

Two submissions are considered: short papers (typically 6-8 pages) and long papers (12-15 pages) in Lecture Notes in Computer Science format. At least three reviewers will review each submission.

Submission Deadline: May 12th, 2023

Notification to Authors: May 26th, 2023

Camera Ready Deadline: June 7th, 2023

Workshop Date: tbd at INTERACT 2023 (August, 28th - September, 1st, 2023)

Expected Outcome

Accepted position papers are published in INTERACT 2023 adjunct conference proceedings, in a Lecture Notes in Computer Science volume. We also expect to discuss at the workshop how to disseminate individual contributions to the community in a special issue in a journal or in an edited volume.
