1. Can students switch their core discipline?

Yes, students can switch their core discipline if they meet the requirements for the new discipline. These requirements include completing 15 ECTS for core modules and 30 ECTS for complementary modules. Please check the Module-tool when you want to switch your core module, as it requires confirmation from the course director.

2. Which modules in Stud.IP can Interdisciplinary Master students attend, and which modules they are not permitted to attend?

Please refer to the module-choice-tool to determine the modules you are eligible to participate in. Although some modules are taught in German, you may inquire with the professor to see if the examination can be conducted in English. The language of instruction and examination is at the discretion of the individual professors. If you select a module that is not intended for the interdisciplinary Master's degree programme, you will not be able to take an examination for it.

3. I'd like to attend a module that has a limited number of participants. Can we request the lecturer to increase the number of participants?

Unfortunately, no. The professor maintains a limited number of study places to ensure high quality in their subject.

4. I found an interesting project that is offered in the Birkenfeld campus. Can I have it?

You should contact the professor of the project to see if it is suitable with your Master’s course. Additionally, please note that the public transportation connection between Trier and Birkenfeld is not convenient.

5. Can the Master Module replace the Bridge Module?

Yes, as long as the student fulfills the 90 ECTS requirement.

6. Repeat examination in case of failed examination

EXAMPLE

Situation:
You failed an exam in a bachelor module at the end of the summer semester 2023.

Facts:
The bachelor module can only be used as a bridge module.
You will be automatically registered for the next exam in this module.
There is no possibility to deregister directly from an exam once failed.
The date for the second exam can be either the beginning or the end of the winter semester 2023/24 (please check the definition in the exam schedule). If you fail the second exam or not appear for the exam, you will be considered to have failed the exam. The date for the third and final exam will be in the summer semester 2024.

You will be exmatriculated from the program if you have failed a module 3 times.

If you pass one of the 3 exams in this module, everything is fine.

Alternative to not complete the module:
You need at least 30 ECTS of passed modules excluding the interdisciplinary seminar, the interdisciplinary project and the master thesis.
You must define a list of a total of 30 ECTS of these passed modules as a bridge module. All other bachelor modules are subsequently optional modules. This means that you are no longer registered for the examination of another bachelor module.
You must define the list of the bridge modules on a form in Student Services with your signature.

Consequence of alternative:

  1. the bridge courses are firmly defined and cannot be changed later.
  2. you cannot select additional bachelor modules as part of the final grade of the program certificate.
  3. if you define a master module as a bridge module, you cannot use it later as a core or complementary module.

Schedule:
As you will be exmatriculated after you have failed a module three times, the last and third examination of the module will take place in the summer semester of 2024. You can wait until you receive the results of the winter semester 2023/24. In any case, you must set the list of the bridge module before you have failed the third time.

7. What happens if a student fails a non-core module three times?

If a student fails any module three times, they will be terminated from the Master's Program. Moreover, they will be prohibited from studying any related courses in Germany. There are two scenarios if you fail a module twice:

  1. You must dedicate more effort to studying this module, attend lectures more regularly, and pass the exam.
  2. Check the “Repeat examination in case of failed examination section”.
8. How can we register for an Interdisciplinary Project in Stud.IP or QIS?

You should find a professor to supervise your interdisciplinary project, which must be related to your core discipline. The supervising professor will then report your successful project to Student Services or QIS.

9. I found an internship offer at a company for a duration of more than 2 months. Can I do the internship and exchange it for ECTS credits?

You are allowed to undertake an internship at the company. However, please note that an internship is not a requirement for the Master in Interdisciplinary Engineering program. Therefore, your internship cannot be recognized for ECTS credits. Nonetheless, completing an internship can assist you in finding a Master’s Thesis opportunity in the industry and will also enhance your CV when you are looking for a job in the future.

10. Once I have completed all my courses, including seminars and interdisciplinary projects, can I take a semester off before starting my Master's thesis?

If you do not pay the student contribution or attend lectures for one semester, you may be deregistered from the Master's program. Please contact Student Services for more details.

11. Is it permissible to undertake my Master's thesis while still having a few courses remaining, or is it mandatory to complete all coursework before starting the thesis?

To register for the Master's thesis, you need to have completed at least 50 ECTS of the master modules and have no bridging modules remaining.

12. Are there specific time constraints for enrolling in the thesis once all coursework is completed?

You have 3 months to start with the thesis after you complete all courses.

13. I have finished my B1 German. Can I skip the German course and exchange my B1 certificate for 5 ECTS credits?

To obtain 5 ECTS credits, you need to attend a German module and pass the exam. Your certificate cannot be recognized for 5 ECTS credits.
