Green Campus

Waste reduction is very important nowadays. Non-recyclable items can no longer be thrown away excessively, as raw materials are running out. There are solutions for this.

The virtual project was integrated into the language courses French B1 at the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld and German as a Foreign Language B1 at ENSISA and ENSCmu in Mulhouse and INSA in Toulouse, respectively. The project centered around the question, ”How can we make our universities more sustainable places? / Comment faire de nos deux écoles des lieux d‘enseignement et d‘apprentissage plus durables“?

The goal was to develop and implement ideas and initiatives on various topics reflected in the SDGs. The Franco-German teams first exchanged information about the status quo on aspects such as waste prevention, sustainable fashion, or sustainable nutrition at their universities. Then, they searched worldwide for universities considered pioneers in the chosen topic. In a final work assignment, the teams were allowed to demonstrate their creativity by translating their ideas for a sustainable campus into a concept.

The target competencies of the Franco-German interdisciplinary virtual projects can be summarized as follows:

  • Creativity in dealing with new things (digital tools, among others)
  • Working autonomously in an international team
  • Improvement of oral language skills and expansion of knowledge of specialized vocabulary in the foreign language
  • Intercultural competence (as well as „Critical Thinking“)

The lecturers in language courses accompanied the projects: here, the focus was on the preliminary discussion of the topics, presentation techniques customary in the country, German-French project management, and the processing of intercultural differences.
