The work was made during the Artist in Residency at Villa Bengel and in the installations of the Hochschule Trier – Campus Idar-Oberstein. It marks a regular approach to stone materials for producing new jewellery pieces while opening new ways to think jewellery.
Idar-Oberstein is a narrow valley situated in a geography that comprehends a large territory composed of valleys, mountains and rivers running every direction you turn. The steep and narrow landscape of the town gives it a peculiar mood, something of a particular environment with it’s houses climbing up the hills, a river running under a highway for obvious lack of available space to build the road and the omnipresent forest everywhere you look. But it’s more than this: there’s a secular history around with the agate cutting mills industry, gemstones to be found in the woods, a perfect day for a mineral and gem hunter. I did this: what a joy! And it is also because of plenty material available, nowadays more reliable on global market for stones, that Idar-Oberstein is a special place to be and to work.
Part of the work done from November to January, and now being continued, approaches my jewellery work to my landscape painting work. Using materials that emanate a mood, or a color tone that reflects a mood I explore this as a plasticity, combining elements in order to achieve a composition. In this composition the several elements sign a perception and create reactions with one another. It is a gesture similar to collage whereas I replace colored paper with stone but keeping some of the traditional goldsmithing practice in order to join materials together. And this way my painting has given space to new jewellery pieces that on it’s turn has given place to new paintings.
