Start of the research project "Material use of oak weak wood"

On 30.10.2019 the Holzkompetenzzentrum Trier received the funding decision for max. 340 TSD € from the sponsor.

The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety on the basis of a resolution of the German Bundestag.

This paves the way for a 39-month research project entitled "Oak Weak Timber", which will be carried out as a joint project with the Forestry Research Institute Baden-Württemberg and the Institute of Innovative Structures of the University of Mainz. The FAWF Rheinland-Pfalz in Trippstadt is a further partner in the project. The project is coordinated by the HS Trier.

This is a federal funding project to preserve and expand the CO2 reduction potential of forests and wood and to adapt forests to climate change (funding guidelines for forest climate funds). The object of the project is to create the possibility of using previously unused, low-value weak deciduous wood. To this end, new methods will be tested with which the wood can be used for higher-value use in the construction sector, despite the lack of standard dimensions and geometries. In order to achieve this, a new process chain is to be developed and investigated in which the construction of buildings is flexibly adapted to the respective wood supply on the basis of available wood. An essential aspect is the strength testing of such assortments and the resulting development of a hall supporting structure made of weak hardwood.
