SCH:MUR – Festival for Jewellery Art in Graz

Stephie Morawetz, a graduate of the Gemstone and Jewellery Campus, is organising a jewellery festival in Graz together with her colleagues. With SCH:MUR 2026, the city will host its first festival dedicated entirely to contemporary jewellery art. Under the title ‘Copy:Paste’, 32 jewellery artists will explore questions of originality, appropriation and artistic dialogue. A varied programme of exhibitions, openings, guided tours, a symposium and an excursion, running from 7 to 18 July 2026, invites visitors to discover jewellery art in all its facets.

Graz looks back on a vibrant tradition of jewellery art. Since the 1980s, artists such as Werner Schmeiser, Wolfgang Rahs and many others have shaped the development of contemporary jewellery in the city. SCH:MUR 2026 is now the first festival to draw on this history whilst also opening up new perspectives.

Under this year’s theme, ‘Copy:Paste’, the festival explores fundamental questions of artistic practice: where does quotation end and plagiarism begin? When does an homage become a distinct artistic stance? And how is our understanding of originality changing in an age where not only people but also machines reproduce images and ideas?

At the heart of the event is an extraordinary exhibition: 32 jewellery artists were each assigned, by lot, the work of another participating artist. Taking this as their starting point, they developed an independent artistic response. The result is a network of 64 jewellery pieces that brings to light exchange, references and creative development.

Alongside the main exhibition, SCH:MUR is hosting numerous events in Graz – including opening receptions, guided tours, a symposium, an excursion and the presentation of a kind of residency. The festival fosters encounters between artists, students and an interested public, bringing the diversity of contemporary jewellery art to life.
