Nikita Kavryzhkin – “Atmosphere. Symbol. Narrative”

Naked Scream | Brooch | Mookaite jasper, Edelstahl | 2023

Between silence, space, and meaning: jewellery artist Nikita Kavryzhkin explores the power of atmosphere and emptiness in his work. His pieces move within the tension between proximity and distance, inviting a contemplative mode of perception.

Nikita Kavryzhkin approaches form through a search for atmosphere – an invisible quality that lends his works emotional depth. He understands atmosphere and aura as transcendent phenomena, with the experience of the sublime playing a central role: an interplay of space, sound, light, shadow and other sensory elements. Against this backdrop, he is interested in how material, proportion and composition can evoke a feeling even before any conscious perception. Silence and tension thus become integral components of his works.

Inspired by the impact of sacred spaces and the monumentality of religious architecture – detached from their Christian context – Kavryzhkin creates clear, symmetrical and architecturally reminiscent forms in stone. He deliberately employs the cold aesthetic of the material to express tranquillity and restraint. At the heart of these works lies a deliberate void, understood not as absence but as a concentrated moment of attention. This gives rise to quiet, intimate structures in which the tension between proximity and distance – both spatial and temporal – can be experienced. Through a play on blurring and mystery, a form of intimacy unfolds that develops its particular effect precisely from a distance.

Nikita Kavryzhkin was born in Russia and now lives and works in Idar-Oberstein. He graduated from the State Academic Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in St Petersburg and from Trier University of Applied Sciences, specialising in gemstones and jewellery in Idar-Oberstein.

Kavryzhkin has received numerous awards for his work, including the 2021 Marzee Graduate Prize, the Award from the Gallery of Art in Legnica at the 32nd International Jewellery Competition ‘Empathy’ (2024) during the Legnica Silver Festival, and the 2025 Herbert Hofman Prize at Handwerk & Design 2025.
